Atomic&#8217;s Mel Naismith caught up with the multi-award winning artist to get his take on Making Lemonade and also to unpack what Toby is working on next as a musician.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"http:\/\/mag.atomicmusic.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_2014-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19273\"\/><figcaption>Making Lemonade by Toby Mobbs Certified Radium, Plutonium and Triple-Uranium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: The\nsun has set on Making Lemonade. The lemons have been squeezed, there\u2019s just\nthis empty shell of a lemon left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel: I feel\nlike there are those dry bits that you can put in the fire to ignite it. No,\nI\u2019m done with lemons and lemonade. We\u2019re here to talk to everyone about today\nis Moments. You\u2019ve got a new song coming out. It\u2019s very different, it\u2019s not\nwhat I was expecting. Where did this sound come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mag.atomicmusic.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tby-2-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19274\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: A\nfair few people have heard a little snippet of this, I sent a tiny taster to\nevery person who purchased my first single and that was the general consensus.\nMoments is sort of going into hard rock territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a\nsound that I\u2018ve grown up with and I really love it a lot. Whenever I write a\nsong, it\u2019s based on that heavier kind of version, like playing in a band. So I\nreally wanted to bring that out on my next song. When I\u2019m playing a song at\nhome I interpret it like, how it\u2019s going to come out from a full band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few more\nsongs are going to head in that direction off an upcoming album as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Doc, this is heavy...\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i4MToeUis7g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel: Everyone\nsays that you are such an excellent solo performer. Why are you writing your\nsongs for a band?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: It\u2019s a\nvery different feeling for me when I\u2019m playing solo, from when I was playing in\nbands years ago. When I\u2019m solo, it\u2019s all on me. If anything doesn\u2019t go right,\nit\u2019s all a reflection on me. In a band situation I can sort of let go which\nbrings me back to that feeling I had in high-school when I was in a lot of\nbands and I\u2019ve missed that feeling, for a very long time. A bit of fun. I\u2019m\nhaving a lot of fun with these new songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mag.atomicmusic.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tby-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19269\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel: Is it\nright to say that performing solo can be a bit of a lonely pursuit? Because you\nhave to do it all yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: Yeah,\nit comes as no surprise that there\u2019s so much planning to put into a solo tour\nwhich is a lot of work and is why I\u2019ve put my efforts into recording, to get\nout of that mind frame of doing a lot of work and get into a more fun situation\nby doing more recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Toby is proud that every sound recorded on his new single Moments is played by himself in his \u201csecond bedroom\u201d studio recording space. It\u2019s all him! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel: You\nare one of the hardest working musicians that I know, you\u2019ve won more awards\nthan I can lift. I know that I\u2019ve been caught in jobs where everything just becomes\npurpose driven which removes creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mag.atomicmusic.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/DSC_0547-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19272\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: I\nthink you\u2019ve summed it up really well just there. I\u2019m very purpose driven and\ngoal-orientated. I have a 3-4 year plan with music and I have lost spontaneity\nwith things and the music I\u2019m recording at the moment and want to play in that\nband situation. I want to remove myself from all those plans and get that\nrelease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel: and\nyou get to blame some of the mistake son those other and members<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby: [laughs]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Both \u2018Making Lemonade\u2019 and \u2018Moments\u2019 will feature on the upcoming album \u2018Placid In The Rough\u2019 to coincide with a national tour in 2022. It\u2019s here that Toby plans to put his band idea into action, bringing the studio sound of \u2018Moments\u2019 to the stage. Until then, Toby has said he\u2019ll be releasing more singles. His next one is not too far off, titled \u201cAll; Right Now\u201d and plans to feature quite the ensemble of local artists. You heard it here first!
