Is\nit a sign of your intelligence then that you got in contact with these guys to\njoin Catnip Kaiser recently?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: Josh messaged us originally in January saying \u2018hey if you need somebody hit me up and we had only just gotten Doug\u2019s brother, and then six months later when he had to leave we were like to Josh, “hey are you up for a jam”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s\neveryone\u2019s role in the band?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh\nplays lead guitar, Doug is the drummer, Pete is the bass player and Jack is\nsinger\/guitarist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\nboys recently sold over 100 songs on the Atomic music space, making you the\nsecond artist ever to go Radium. As well as being the most commercially\nsuccessful artist on Atomic of all time, how do you feel about that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: Wait what? That\u2019s unreal! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: That song had been rewritten about three or 4 times. Starting off with me writing it on the toilet and then taking it into a standard 4 chord song before bringing it to these guys and building it up into something more and so the fact that its something we\u2019ve spent a fair bit of time on and its gotten such a great response from everyone means the absolute world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Pop\npunk is such an underrepresented genre in the area, what made you think let\u2019s\nstart a pop punk band and write a couple of original tunes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack:\nWhen it started it was just gonna be a once of thing. I was working at the uni\nbar at the time and they needed an act for one of the parties they had. And I\nsaid a a joke, \u201cput me up there\u201d, and they said, \u201cOkay, you\u2019ve got it. October\nfest, get people together.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Pop punk it\u2019s one of those genre\u2019s that brings people back, you know, their teenage years, the nostalgia. As soon as you hear you know, the start of All the Small Things or the Amercian Idiot riff,. People just go nuts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: plus power chords are really easy (all laugh)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: Yeah so we basically just molded into the pop punk thing because we got such a good response about it, and it\u2019s also been my dream to be in a pop punk band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\nheard your demo before you went down to Dave Wilson [laughing ensues] <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: I\u2019ve heard some stuff on Atomic. And there’s a lot of great stuff on there, but to hear that it wasn\u2019t good enough to go on there in the first place\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s\na pretty rare thing to hear to be honest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doug:\nIt was fairly rough for sure, I mean we recorded it in a bedroom, we just\nwanted a track more than anything and we didn\u2019t really think about ironing it\ndown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\ndid you find working with Dave?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doug:\nHe\u2019s bloody brilliant. Yeah, he knows what hes doing, he\u2019s fairly quiet as well\nlike he wasn\u2019t really intrusive which is what we wanted. We still wanted to\nkeep it an original track and we didn\u2019t want to go down there and unbeknown to\nus end up getting it rewritten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: The thing that was cool with Dave too is that, as soon as he got us to play through it all as a band, he was like, \u201cOh yeah, this is my kinda stuff\u201d. And straight away we were like ‘righto this is gonna be a bit of fun here’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did\nyou know Dave is an ARIA nominated producer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh:\nYeah, he definitely is. He\u2019s had artists who\u2019ve won ARIA\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nnow he\u2019s a Radium producer as well. How does it feel, the thought of having an\nARIA award winner producing having done your track?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: It\u2019s actually really cool to think that, I just found out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh:\nI didn\u2019t have the benefit of being on this track with the boys, but I have\nworked with Dave and he\u2019s always been a great bloke to work with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doug:\nI\u2019m tickled pink. And you can tell, when we were going through our processes\nrecording with him. You can smell it, that he knows what he\u2019s doing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack:\nThe thing I liked about him, with my vocals is that he\u2019s the first ever person\nto say, \u201cNah I didn\u2019t like that, do it again\u201d. And there were lines where we\u2019d\nsort of done like 20 attempts, just because we didn\u2019t quite nail it. And that\nwas cool, it\u2019s like this bloke cares about what he\u2019s doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well,\nAtomic were the first people ever to tell you to record it again*<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh:\nOh, I see where this interview is going, we are just getting cut down [all\nlaugh] <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: Well it\u2019s all your fault then, thanks for the success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nis the goal for your music?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: I\u2019d love to see a pop-punk track playing in the ARIA\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: 5SOS came into the scene in 2014 and they had this pop punk vibe about them, and that was awesome. Turning on your radio and hearing guitars on there again, and that\u2019s our aim. To eventually get guitars and drums and bass back on the radio, because 5SOS did something that hadn\u2019t been done since the early 2000\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: Yeah, and not having our third album come out sounding like Shaun Mendez. (laughs)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doug:\nNah, our main aim would be to work ourselves up, make some good pop punk and\nthen get ourselves to the point where, a producer tries to get us to use\nauto-tune and then just bash the living shit out of him [stunned laughter]<\/strong> Process of elimination bro, get all\nthe trash off the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So,\nyou guys seem to have high aspirations, what is the plan from here to there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: We\u2019re planning to do some more recording with Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack:\nWe\u2019re meeting with Ionei Heckenberg from a band called Ocean Sleeper, who we have\ncome tight with. We reached out to him and asked if he\u2019d be keen to feature on\none of our songs. And he\u2019s been really cool, getting around us playing at the\nAntagonist AD gig. One day we plan on getting that song out. It won\u2019t be on\nthis EP though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack: Will King from Windwaker who I know through Jesse Crofts (Windwaker) has designed the cover for us, we just need to get our songs recorded now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s\nin the pipeline for gigs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh: At the moment we\u2019re setting up some in-ear monitors and getting ourselves happy with how we sound. We practice pretty regularly. And finding bands locally that we\u2019d like to play with. But, yeah the focus is definitely on recording and getting a feature from a bigger artist in order to get some extra exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
